Mesothelioma from 9/11

You will remember that 9/11 was a tragic date. But for some, 9/11 continues to cause tragedy.

The huge dust cloud caused by the falling of the twin towers was full of dangerous substances. One of those chemicals was asbestos.

Debbie Reeve is the latest victim of that asbestos. She worked as an EMT and spent months at the Ground Zero morgue being constantly exposed to the small amounts of contaminants. Her family claims that her exposure at Ground Zero is the direct cause of her asbestos related cancer and death.

She worked for a total of 17 years with her final work being related to 9/11.

Debbie Reeve became symptomatic in December of 2004 and was diagnosed with mesothelioma in April of 2005. She recently died from that illness and was buried on Monday - March 21, 2006 in the Bronx.

Unfortunately, the problems continue for her family who are left with over $100,000 in bills. They have been fighting for months to get the benefits that Debbie needed to pay for her medical care.

At the time of this writing, the Fire Department of New York and the lawers for the Fire Department are denying that her death is job related and have denied any more than $25,000 to cover funeral expenses.

There are claims that over 20 deaths have come from exposure to harmful substances related to 9/11.

The union that she belonged to has turned to a mesothelioma attorney to try and recoup the money needed to cover her medical bills.

This case highlights the reason that asbestos attorneys need to get involved in many of the cases of asbestosis. Even though employees are exposed to significant amounts of asbestos, their employers may deny that there is any connection between their illness and that exposure.

Unfortunately for the moment, the courts will have to continue deciding the outcomes of most of these cases.

Putting Mesothelioma Into Perspective

Mesothelioma is an uncommon form of cancer, usually associated with previous exposure to asbestos. Of course, saying it's uncommon is hardly comforting to someone dealing with this cancer or who has a loved one suffering from it. In this disease, cancerous cells develop in the mesothelium, which is a protective lining that covers most internal organs of the body. Its most common site is the outer lining of the lungs and chest cavity, known as the pleura, but it may also occur in the lining of the abdominal cavity, called the peritoneum or a sac that surrounds the heart, called the pericardium. These sensitive tissues become very irritated as a result of the cancer's progression.

The most common reason people develop mesothelioma is from asbestos exposure with those who have worked on jobs where they inhaled asbestos particles. Some flooring adhesives also contained asbestos fibers and even pipe insulation was made with asbestos for a time. People exposed to these fibers have a greater risk of developing this cancer, but it is not a certainty.

Mesothelioma clinical symptoms may not appear until 30 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos. This increased the difficulties associated in legal claims because the time between the exposure and the disease was so long.

Shortness of breath and pain in the chest are often symptoms of pleural mesothelioma. Peritoneal mesothelioma clinical symptoms include weight loss and muscle wasting. Abdominal swelling and pain due to a buildup of fluid in the abdominal cavity are also common symptoms associated with Peritoneal mesothelioma. Other clinical symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma may include bowel obstruction, blood clotting abnormalities, anemia, and fever. As the cancer spreads beyond the mesothelium, symptoms may include pain, trouble swallowing, or swelling of the neck or face. These symptoms may be caused by mesothelioma or by other, less serious conditions and should always be evaluated by a medical professional for a proper diagnosis.

As there is no universally agreed protocol for screening people who have been exposed to asbestos, early detection is difficult. Discuss any possible risk factors you may have with a doctor if you believe you may have been exposed to asbestos.

Biologically, asbestos fibres have been shown to alter the function macrophages, which are specialized cells of the immune system. This ultimately creates conditions which favor the development of mesothelioma. Macrophages generate increased amounts of hydroxyl radicals, which are normal by-products of cellular anaerobic metabolism. However, these free radicals are also known as clastogenic and membrane-active agents thought to promote the carcinogenic effect of asbestos. These free radicals can participate in the oncogenic process by directly and indirectly interacting with DNA, modifying membrane-associated cellular events, including oncogene activation and perturbation of cellular antioxidant defenses. Because of these factors, healthy levels of dietary antioxidants may improve the bodily capacity to manage the progression of these free radical effects, but it should be noted that nutrition is not regarded as medical intervention for this disease and dietary improvements should be viewed as complimentary benefit by properly nourishing the body and avoiding the more common and more harmful foods which are so common in the average diet in industrialized countries.

Asbestos may also possess immunosuppressive properties and is an issue which is under great study. Again diets, that promote proper immune function may provide some benefit to a person at risk, or deal with the effects of mesothelioma, but it is not considered medical intervention by any means. Mesothelioma: More About this Asbestos Cancer

 Cancers and other forms of diseases are usually named
according to the part of the body or the internal organ
where abnormal growth of malignant cells takes place.
In the case of Mesothelioma, the abnormal cells grow in
the mesothelium, a surface cell layer that covers and
protects most internal organs. Normally, the
mesothelium produces small amount of fluid in order to
lubricate its layersone of which directly covers the
organand allow the movement of the organs, like the
expansion and contraction of the lungs. A Mesothelioma
cancer patients mesothelium produces too much of this
lubricating fluid, thereby damaging nearby tissues and
organs. The most common form of Mesothelioma is Pleural
Mesothelioma, which begins in the Pleural or
Peritoneum, the membrane that lines the chest cavity
and covers the lungs.

About 2,000 cases of Mesothelioma have been noted
yearly in United States. This is still a rare disease
to consider, although the reported incidents have
escalated in the past two decades. It has been observed
and proven that heavy and long exposure to asbestos is
the prime cause of Mesothelioma. Asbestos is a group of
minerals in strong, flexible and fibrous form. It is
used in industrial products such as cement, brake
linings, textiles, electrical insulation, flooring
products, chemical filters, fireproofing materials and
others. This explains why most Mesothelioma patients
are working in construction sites, shipyards and
manufacturing companies of said industrial products.
Small asbestos particles float in the air and are
either inhaled or swallowed by workers or persons
within the vicinity. Aside from Mesothelioma, these
people can acquire asbestosis, a non-cancerous chronic
lung sickness and other forms of cancer of the lungs,
cancer of the larynx and kidney.

Asbestos-related Mesothelioma comprise only 70 to 80
percent of the all the reported cases of the said
cancer. There are reported Mesothelioma cases wherein
the patients did not have any known exposure to
asbestos. Some have been exposed only for a short
period of time but still developed the cancer 20 to 50
years after the exposure, like in the case of a
Mesothelioma cancer patient who only washed clothes
that have been exposed to asbestos. Likewise, asbestos
fibers that have been stuck in the hair strands of a
factory worker can also risk the health of others whom
he lives with. It is therefore important for workers
exposed to asbestos to change their clothes and take a
shower before leaving the workplace to prevent his
family members or companions from inhaling the asbestos
particles and thus, from acquiring Mesothelioma.

The Mesothelioma cancer is slow-forming. Thats why one
develops the cancer so many years after the exposure to
asbestos. Some develop the cancer fifty years after the
exposure, which makes it hard to determine whether the
person has Mesothelioma or not, especially when the
patient has no knowledge of the exposure to asbestos.
Moreover, malignant Mesothelioma shows signs similar to
those of other ailments such as pneumonia. Symptoms of
Pleural Mesothelioma also evident in other illnesses
include: shortness of breath, persistence of cough,
weight loss and chest pain. Peritoneal Mesothelioma,
which affects the abdominal cavity, is indicated by
swelling of and pain in the abdomen, weight loss, bowel
obstruction, anemia, blood clotting abnormalities and
fever.

Complete physical examination is needed to make sure
one has Mesothelioma cancer. This includes xrays of the
body part where the symptoms are felt or seen, CT scan
and MRI. To confirm Mesothelioma, a biopsy is also
performed by a surgeon or oncologist (a physician who
is specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of a
cancer). The sample tissue removed by the surgeon is
examined by the pathologist. Once confirmed, the doctor
then finds out the extent of the cancer, which is
crucial to the treatment of Mesothelioma. Although
malignant, Mesothelioma when earlier diagnosed can
still be treated. Most Mesothelioma patients undergo
surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy.
